Friuli was a march to the southeast of Bavaria, founded in 776, stradling what is now northeast Italy and Slovenia. It included the town and archbishopric of Aquileia on the northern coast of the Adriatic. To the northwest of Friuli was march of Carinthia, founded in 788. By 952 it had joined in the Margavate of Verona, and belonged to Bavaria, and in 978 to Carinthia.
