4077. Sir Robert de Clifford. Born on 1 Apr 1274 in Clifford Castle, Herefordshire. Robert died in the Battle of Bannockburn, Scotland, on 24 Jun 1314; he was 40.

Robert, first Lord Clifford, Lord of Appleby, Westmoreland, Member of Parlement 1299-1313, Sheriff of Westmoreland, Justice in Eyre North of Trent 1297-1307/8, gov. of Nottingham Castle 1298, Capt.Gen. of the marches of Scotland 1299, one of the barons whose seal was affixed to the celebrated letter to the Pope in 1301, granted lands by Edward I, Marshal of England in 1307, and Warden of the Scottish Marches 1308. He was slain at the Battle of Bannockburn.

On 3 Nov 1295 when Robert was 21, he married Maud de Clare (4393) , daughter of Sir Thomas de Clare (4082) (ca 1245-29 Aug 1287) & Juliana fitz Maurice (4449) (ca 1249-aft 1309). Born ca 1276/1279 in Gloucestershire. Maud died on 1 Feb 1324/5.

As a widow, she was found to be heir to her nephew, Thomas de Clare.
