5823. Daniel Cushing Esq. Born ca 1619 in Hingham, Norfolk. Daniel was baptized in Hingham, Norfolk, on 20 Apr 1619.5 Daniel died on 3 Dec 1700 in Hingham, MA.9 Buried in Hingham Cemetery. Occupation: Wheelwright.

Daniel first married Lydia Gilman, second Elizabeth (Jacob) Thaxter, widow of John Thaxter.

Daniel came to Hingham, MA, with his parents in 1635 at the age of 16.16

    A lot of land was granted to him by the Town of Hingham in 1665. He became a freeman in 1671, was an active magistrate and for many years Town Clerk of Hingham, and by the faithful discharge of the duties of this last office rendered invaluable service to the modern antiquary. From 1682, and for many years he kept a country store. Selectman in 1665 and for many years after. Also in the years 1680, 1682, and 1695 he was a delegate to the General Court.
    A work has been published, styled Extracts from the Minutes of Daniel Cushing, of Hingham, with a photograph of his manuscript, etc. Boston — folio. Press of John Wilson & Son, 1865 ; printed by Lincoln. Henry Austin Whitney, of Boston, prepared an addition containing a list of names of persons from Hingham, Eng., and printed by Drake.
    He left a full and minute will, dated 11 Sept., 1693, a copy of which may be found in the N.E. Hist. & Gen. Register, vol. XIV., p. 293.

    To Daniel Cushing, that town [Hingham] is indebted for the first accurate records of the proceedings of the town. His clerkship commenced in 1669, and the method and neatness of the records for many years, does him much credit.

From Lincoln’s History of Hingham:9
    Daniel was an active business man, sagacious and thorough in whatever he undertook; a magistrate of more than ordinary ability; selectman 1665, and for many yrs. after; town clerk from 1669 until the time of his decease; delegate to the General Court in 1680, 1682, and 1695, and a man of influence and power in the community. It is to him more than to any of his contemporaries that the present generation is indebted for much of the valuable information which has come down to us relating to the early planters of this town. He accumulated a large property for the period in which he lived, and his will, dated 11 Sept. 1693, proved 18 Feb. 1700-1, covers sev. pages of MS., in the S.P. rec's. Resided on the paternal homestead, Main St., below ‘Pear Tree Hill.’

On 23 Mar 1690/1 Daniel second married Elizabeth Jacob, daughter of Nicholas Jacob (ca 1604-5 Jun 1657) & Mary Gilman (ca 1605-15 Jun 1681), in Hingham, MA.9 Born ca 1634 in prob. Watertown, MA. Elizabeth died on 24 Nov 1725 in Hingham, MA.9

5824. Capt. Jeremiah Cushing. Born ca 1621 in Hingham, Norfolk. Jeremiah was baptized in Hingham, Norfolk, on 21 Jan 1621.5 Jeremiah died ca 1665. Occupation: mariner.10

Jeremiah became a mariner and commanded a ship trading between Boston and London. He resided in Boston and was lost at sea.5

On 11 Mar 1661/2 Jeremiah married Elizabeth [Wilkie] in Boston, MA. Elizabeth died ca 1689 in Boston, MA.

Elizabeth first married John Wilkie, second Jeremiah Cushing. John and Elizabeth’s daughter Elizabeth Wilkie married first William Condie, and she married second Nathaniel Thomas.

5825. Lieut. Matthew Cushing. Born ca 1623 in Hingham, Norfolk. Matthew was baptized in Hingham, Norfolk, on 5 Apr 1623.5 Matthew died on 1 Jan 1700/1 in Hingham, MA.9 Occupation: wheelwright.5

Matthew took an active and prominent part in the affairs of the town; selectman 13 times between 1661 and 1695, freeman 1679, and was known as “Sergenant,” “Cornet,” and later as “Lieutenant.” He resided at Hingham Center, over the river.5

Having no children, he took his namesake, Mathhew Cushing, son of his brother John, to live with him, and in his will, dated 28 Dec 1700, after making provision for his wife, he left his estate to his nephew Matthew, who succeeded to his occupation of wheelwright and to his home at Hingham Centre.16

    Matthew was a man of prominence and much engaged in the affairs of the town; selectman in 1661, 1663, 1667, 1668, 1670, 1672, 1674, 1675, 1679, 1682, 1687, 1688, and 1695; was kn. as ‘Sergeant,’ as ‘Cornet,’ and later in life as’Lieutenant.’ Resided at Hing. Centre—‘over the river.’ In his will of 28 Dec. 1700, gives to w. Sarah the improvement of ‘my whole estate both real and personal’ while she remains a wid.; ‘to my kinsman Matthew Cushing, the son of my brother John Cushing, who hath lived with me, all my estate (after settling legacies) if he pay to my wife, his aunt, a certain sum of money [naming it] annually while she lives.’ He also bequeaths ‘to my cousins which are the children of my brothers Daniel and John, namely; to Peter, Daniel, Jeremiah, Theophilus, Matthew, and Deborah, the children of Daniel Cushing,—and to John, Thomas, Jeremiah, James, Joshua, Caleb, Joseph, Benjamin, Sarah and Deborah, the children of John Cushing, to each £50;’ gives ‘£5 to Marah Burr, the wife of John Burr;’ refers to a lot ‘of land I had of my father-in-law John Beal.’ Witnesses, Nathl. Hall, Robert Waterman, Benjamin Tuels, Samuel Thaxter.

On 25 Feb 1652/3 Matthew married Sarah Jacob, daughter of Nicholas Jacob (ca 1604-5 Jun 1657) & Mary Gilman (ca 1605-15 Jun 1681), in Hingham, MA.9 Born ca 1636 in Watertown or Hingham, MA. Sarah died on 8 Aug 1701 in Hingham, MA.9

They had no children.

5826. Deborah Cushing. Born ca 1625 in Hingham, Norfolk. Deborah was baptized in Hingham, Norfolk, on 17 Feb 1625.5 Deborah died on 25 Sep 1700 in Hingham, MA.9

On 9 May 1648 Deborah married Matthias Briggs in Hingham, MA.9 Born say 1622 in England. Matthias died on 24 Feb 1697 in Hingham, MA.5

Matthias and Deborah resided on Main St. at or near Pear Tree Hill, Hingham.5

5827. Col. John Cushing Esq. Born ca 1627 in Hingham, Norfolk.7 John died on 31 Mar 1708 in Scituate, MA.18

“In 1638 John Cushing, aged eleven, came with his parents Matthew and Nazareeth and four siblings to New England. ... John returned to England briefly in 1657-1658, visiting his uncle Peter Cushing in London, and buying clothes, a bed tick and a pair of steelyards there, as well as travelling to Norwich and Hingham in Norfolk, where he visited other relatives .... This trip may represent the beginnings of John Cushing’s long career as a merchant, town official and justice of the peace.”19

    John Cushing, sen. came into Scituate from Hingham, 1662, and purchased the farm on ‘Belle house neck,’ of Capt. John Vassall, son of William Vassall, to whom it was laid out 1634. He was the son of Matthew Cushing, and Nazareth Pitcher his wife. Matthew was born in England 1588, the son of Petert Cushing of NOrfolk, whose grandfather had possessed large estates in Lombard street, London. Matthew Cushing, with his wife and five children, viz. Daniel, Jeremiah, Matthew, Deborah, and John, sailed from Gravesend, April 26, 1638, in the ship Diligent, John Martin of Ipswich master, and arrived at Boston on the 10th of August. They appear in Hingham in the autumn of the same year. ... We return to John, sen., who settled in Scituate. ... He was a deputy to the Colony Court many years, and first in 1674: an assistant of the Colony Government 1689, 90 and 91, and representative to the Court at Boston, the first year after the two Colonies were united in 1692, and several succeeding years.

    In 1657 he, together with Matthias Briggs, purchased for 120 pounds the Varsall Estate at ‘Belle House Neck,’ Scituate, which consisted of 120 acres with house and barns. He did not move there, however, until about 1662. The land on which the farm was situated was always known as ‘Belle House Neck,’ a name given to the place in consequence of a of a bell that hung at the house there, for a century, to give an alarm to the neighboring country in case of the approach of Indians. In 1663 he was surveyer of highways and in 1667, receiver of excises. He was deputy to the colony in 1674 and often reelected. In 1673, he was on the committee for dividing Scituate lands; and in 1676, was chosen to report to the Government a statement of all services of the soldiers of Scituate in the war with King Philip. Selectman from 1674 to 1686 inclusive, and County Magistrate (Plymouth Co.) 1685 to 1692. Assistant of the Old Colony Government of Plymouth Colony 1689 to 1691, and representative to the General Court at Boston in 1692 (the first year after the two colonies, Plymouth and Massachusetts, were united), and for several succeeding years, Member of the Council 1706 and 1707. He was also Colonel of the Plymouth Regiment.

In 1676 he was chosen to make report to the government of all services of the soldiers in King Philip’s War from the town of Scituate.16

On 20 Jan 1658 John married Sarah Hawke, daughter of Matthew Hawke (ca 1610-11 Dec 1684) & Margaret [Hawke] (-18 Mar 1684), in Hingham, MA.7 Born ca 1641 in Hingham, MA. Sarah was baptized in Hingham, MA, on 1 Aug 1641.9 Sarah died on 9 Mar 1678/9 in Scituate, MA.18
