“Valentine Rathbone left Rhode Isand and settled at Pittsfield in 1769, and became the minister of the Baptist Church which he founded in 1772. He carried on the clothing business in Pittsfield. On Feb. 12, 1770, Henry Van Schaak sold to Valentine Rathbone lands. Deed dated Jun 10, 1791, witness Ruth Longworthy. In 1779 he was teaching elder of the Shakers at Pittsfield, Mass. He deeded lands to Joseph Dart in 1800; Reuben Rathbone, witness. Valentine, then of Pittsfield, Mass., deeded to Rufus Coggeswell of Richmond, dated Nov. 5, 1801, book 40, page 12. He built clothier works in Pittsfield, 1769. Elder Valentine Rathbone the pastor of the Baptist church organized in 1772, was no less ardent in his patriotism, than his congregational brothers. A clothier by trade he had without abandoning that pursuit and without the advantages of a classical education founded the church to which he ministered from proselytes made by his own preaching in his own house. The results of his speaking indicate that its style was effective. The temperament of the man suggest that it was fiery and vehement and nervous. His fellow citizens manifested esteem for his character and his talents by electing him to represent them in county congress over which he often presided and at interesting crises to the general court.”
Valentine was a Baptist minister filling various pastorates, the last being at Marcellus, NY. His will was proved 10 Apr 1813 (Onondaga Co. Surr. Rec.) He willed his farm, his Susquehanna lands and all his personal property to his son, Saxton, who was to support him and Tabitha until their deaths. Token bequests of $1 each were made to his other surviving children, and the heirs of those who had died.

Y., and thence to their brother Rev. Valentine Rathbone at Marcellus, N. Y., where they arrived at the moment that Valentine's son Reuben was brought into the house dead.
