Dr. Stiles, writing in 1793, stated that “Mrs. Beers is of a singularly tenacious and retentive memory, well read, an excellent historian and versed in family anecdotes and antiquities of New Haven. ... Mrs. Beers was a born historic genius.”6

From Jacobus’ Bulkeley Genealogy:6 William was Clerk of Benedict Arnold’s 2nd Co., Governor’s Foot Guard, which responded in 1775 to the Lexington Alarm. He early exhibited remarkable mental power, being well prepared for Yale College at nine years of age. He was the first cashier and head of the old New Haven Bank, incorporated in 1792. Devoting the last twenty or thirty years of his life to intensive reading, and possessing an extraordblary memory, he was considered one of the great antiquarians and thoroughly versed historians in the country.6
