    Samuel, his wife and six children, plus Samuel’s brother William journeyed from McKay, Ohio to Montrose, Illinois in a covered wagon in late spring of 1857. They lived in the wagon while clearing some land and building a log house. Samuel died at his farm home, June 5, 1898. His funeral was held among the hickory trees and burrial was made in the Mullen Cemetery near his home.

Funeral services for Mrs. M.S. Shaffer, who died at her home in Moore Wednesday night, were held at the Moore Baptist church Thursday afternoon. Rev. Payne officiated. Burial was in the Moore cemetery. Mrs. Shaffer was 77 years old. She was an "eighty-niner."
