Samuel “settled within the limits of the present town of Eastham, near the house of the late Deacon Joshua Paine. He was much employed in public affairs. He was six years selectman of Eastham, and for some time lieutenant of the military company.”95

12590. Capt. Thomas Paine. Born ca 1656 in Eastham, MA. Thomas died in Truro, MA on 23 Jun 1721.489 Capt. Thomas Paine, Esq. dyed the 23rd day of June in the year 1721. Buried in Old North Cemetery, Truro.489

“Thomas Paine, the second son [of Thomas Paine], born in 1657, was a man of prominence. He succeeded Mark Snow, as clerk of Eastham, in 1695, and was yearly elected until 1701, when he was succeeded by his younger brother, John. He was an excellent clerk. He was a selectman of Eastham seven yeras. Hebecame a landholder at Pamet, now Truro, adn removed there and settled on the north side of Little Pamet river, wehre the house spot is yet to be seen. He was clerk of the proprietors many years. He was selectman of Truro seven years, representative five years, and town clerk several years. He was justice of the peace, deacon of the church, captain of the military company, and a special justice of the court of common pleas, to which office he was appointed July 5, 1713. He died June 23, 1721, in the 65th year of his age. He was twice married, and father of fourteen children. His descendants are widely scattered, numerous and highly respected. From his daughter Hannah descended the late Hon. Horace Binney of Philadelphia.”95

Elisha was a resident of Barnstable in 1689, but moved back to Eastham and resided in “Little Skaket Neck” until 1703.95

“After marriage Elisha and Rebecca Paine settled first at Eastham, but where in Barnstable in 1689. They returned to Eastham and resided there until about 1703, when they removed to that part of Plainfield, now Canterbury, Conn., where he purchased a tract of five hundred acres of wild land. Here he took an active part in all public affairs. He was one of the founders of the church in that town in 1711.”254

James “went to Barnstable to reside in 1689. He was a school teacher, miller, cooper and clerk. He was in Captain John Gorham’s company at the expedition against Canada in 1691, as ‘clerk.’ For his services, his heirs in 1736 received a grant of land in Maine. He was the first clerk of the East precint or parish in Barnstable. He died at Barnstable, Nov. 12, 1718, and lies buried in the old cemetery, where a headstone marks the spot; he also was a man of literary turn of mind. He was a member of the Barnstable church.”95
On 9 Apr 1691 when James was 25, he married Bethiah Thatcher (13048) , daughter of Col. John Thatcher (17 Mar 1637/8-8 Mar 1713) & Rebecca Winslow (4453) (15 Jul 1643-14 Jul 1683).261 Born on 10 Jul 1671 in Yarmouth, MA. Bethiah died on 8 Jul 1734; she was 62.261

12596. Joseph Paine. Born ca 1667 in Eastham, MA. Joseph died in Eastham, MA on 1 Oct 1712.148

Joseph “removed from Eastham to Harwich, now Brewster, before 1700. He was one of the founders of the Brewster church, Oct. 17, 1700. He was selectman of the town in 1701, and by successive elections until 1711. He was chosen town clerk in 1706, and annually chosen until his death, Oct. 1, 1712. He appears to have enjoyed athletic feats in his youthful days. His nephew in his journal syas: ‘He was very stout, and flung Col. Thacher, the Champion of Bay State, at Commencement.’ He was an exemplary member of the church. ... Most of his descendants are in Maine.”95
On 27 May 1691 Joseph married Patience Sparrow (24902) , daughter of Capt. Jonathan Sparrow (ca 1629-21 Mar 1707) & Hannah Prence (9728) (ca 1629-25 Nov 1698), in Eastham, MA.148 Born on 25 Oct 1675 in Eastham, MA.261 Patience died in Barnstable, MA, on 25 Oct 1745; she was 70.372
