4274. King Edward III of England. Born on 13 Nov 1312 in Windsor Castle, Berkshire, England.2 Edward III died in Sheen Palace, Richmond, Surrey, on 21 Jun 1377; he was 64. Buried in Westminster Abbey, London.2

Edward III, King of England (1327-1377). During his first three years, his mother Isabella and Roger de Mortimer actually held power. He was succeeded by his grandson Richard II.

Edward began the Hundred Year’s War betweeen England and France. In 1337 Philip VI of France confiscated the duchy of Guyenne from England. Edward asserted his claim to the the Frech throne and invaded northern France in 1337/8. The Black Death hit both countries and a truce was made in 1347. But the war continued in 1355, and the English forces captured King John II of France in 1356. He agreed to cede Aquitaine and some territories in northern France and was released in 1360. But John II did not formally renounce the ceded territories and the war continued.

On 24 Jan 1328 when Edward III was 15, he first married Philippa of Hainault (4238) , daughter of Count Willem III of Hainault & Holland (3877) (ca 1286-7 Jun 1337) & Jeanne de Valois (4416) (ca 1294-7 Mar 1342), in Yorkminster, York.2 Born on 24 Jun 1311 in Valenciennes. Philippa died in Windsor Castle, Berkshire, on 15 Aug 1369; she was 58.2 Buried in Westminster Abbey, London.2

4275. Earl John of Cornwall. Born on 15 Aug 1316 in Eltham Palace. John died in Perth, Scotland, on 14 Sep 1336; he was 20. Buried in Westminster Abbey.

4276. Eleanor of England. Born on 8 May 1318 in Woodstock. Eleanor died in Deventer on 22 Apr 1355; she was 36. Buried in Deventer Abbey.

In May 1332 Eleanor married Duke Rainald II of Guelders, son of Count Reinald I of Guelders (-1326) & Margareta de Dampierre (-1331), in Nimeguen. Rainald II died in 1343.

4277. Joan of England. Born on 5 Jul 1321 in Tower of London. Joan died in Hertford Castle, on 7 Sep 1362; she was 41. Buried in Newgate.

On 17 Jul 1328 when Joan was 7, she married King David II Bruce of Scotland (4498) , son of King Robert I Bruce of Scotland (4204) (11 Jul 1274-7 Jun 1329) & Elizabeth de Burgh (-1327), in Berwick-on-Tweed. Born on 5 Mar 1324 in Dunfermline Palace, Fife. David II Bruce died in Edinburgh Castle, on 22 Feb 1370; he was 45. Buried in Holyrood Abbey, Edinburgh.
