3226. Queen Berenguela I of Castile. Born in 1180 in Burgos, Spain. Berenguela I died on 8 Nov 1244 in near Burgos, Spain.

In 1188 Berenguela I first married Konrad von Hohenstaufen Duke of Swabia (2601) , son of Friedrich III Barbarossa of Swabia Holy Roman Emperor (2347) (1122-10 Jun 1190) & Countess Palatine Beatrice de Bourgogne (2115) (ca 1145-15 Nov 1185). Born ca 1173. Konrad died on 15 Aug 1196 in Durlach. He was murdered. Marriage was annulled.

In 1197 Berenguela I second married King Alfonso IX of Castile & León (2824) , son of King Ferdinand II of León (2363) (ca 1137-21 Jan 1188) & Urraca of Portugal (2483) (ca 1150/1-16 Oct 1188), in Valladolid. Born on 15 Aug 1171 in Zamora, León. Alfonso IX died in Villanuava de Sarria, Castile, on 24 Sep 1230; he was 59. Marriage was annulled in 1204.

Alfonso, King of Castile & León (1188-1230). He took Mérida and Badajoz in 1230.

The marriage between Berenguela of Castile and Alfonso IX, King of León was disolved by order of the pope (Alfonso IX and and Berenguela’s father Alfonso VIII were first cousins), but their children were proclaimed legitimate.

Urraca married King Alfonso II of Portugal (2958) , son of King Sancho I Martino of Portugal (2485) (1154-1212) & Dulcia of Barcelona (2523) (1159/60-1 Sep 1198). Born on 12 Apr 1185 in Coimbra. Alfonso II died in Coimbra on 5 Mar 1223; he was 37.

Blanca, also spelled Blanche.

On 23 May 1200 when Blanca was 12, she married King Louis VIII of France (2855) , son of King Philip II of France (2403) (22 Aug 1165-14 Jul 1223) & Comtesse Isabel d’ Artois (2586) (Apr 1170-15 Mar 1190), in near Pont-Audemer, Normandy. Born on 5 Sep 1187 in Paris, France. Louis VIII died in Château de Montpensier-en-Auvergne, on 8 Nov 1226; he was 39. Buried in St. Denis, Paris.

Louis VIII, the Lion, king of France (1223-1226). He invaded England in 1216, but was defeated at Lincoln in 1217. In 1226 he resumed the Albigensian Crusade, and conquered Languedoc.

In 1221 Leonor married King Jaime I of Aragon (3319) , son of King Pedro II of Aragon (2834) (ca 1176-13 Sep 1213) & Marie de Montpellier (3247) (1182-1218), in Agreda. Born on 1 Feb 1208 in Montpelier. Jaime I died in Valencia on 25 Jul 1276; he was 68. Marriage was annulled in 1229.

James I, “el Conquistador”, King of Aragon (1213-1276). He conquered Majorca in 1229 and received the surrender of the city of Valeia in 1238, and so added the titles King of Majorca and King of Valencia.

In 1215 Enrique I married Mafalda of Portugal (2959) , daughter of King Sancho I Martino of Portugal (2485) (1154-1212) & Dulcia of Barcelona (2523) (1159/60-1 Sep 1198). Born ca 1197. Mafalda died in 1257. They were divorced in 1216.
